This university was split from Magadh University. This split was done due to the difficulties faced by managing Magadh University. MU was oversized, so dividing the university into two or three universities was essential. The process was started in 2017 when the application for the post of vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor began. The appointment was made in 2018 by the governor of Bihar, Satya Pal Malik. Girish Kumar Choudhary and Gulab Chand Ram Jaiswal were appointed for these two posts under the Bihar State University Act 1976.
